Mamie Glass

October 11, 1926 – December 7, 2019

Mamie Glass, known professionally as Dr. Mamie Bailey B Sc., M.D., L.M.C.C., F.R.C.P.C. born October 11, 1926 left peacefully on December 7, 2019 at the age of 93 years. Mamie was born in Calgary Alberta and lived her youth on the farm by the Big Rock near Okotoks, AB. Mamie survived polio as a toddler. She shared many stories with her children about her youth; swimming in the river, taking jaunts to the mountains with cousins for picnics, skipping by grades in school, and farm life. Mamie attended the University of Alberta where she achieved two years pre-med with a Bachelor of Science and four years of medicine. The curriculum at that time, due to the war and need for physicians, was compressed from five years to four years. She received her M.D. in 1949 and was admitted to the Medical Council of Canada in 1950. Mamie specialized in Pathology and was certified as such in 1955 by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada following residency in Boston.

Mamie was the first full-time pathologist in Prince Albert and the Director of Laboratories at the Victoria Union and Holy Family Hospitals from 1957-1960. Following this Mamie took time for her children practicing pathology part time until 1968 when she practiced full time once again. In 1972 she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Mamie’s career was 48 years long and she officially retired in 1997 letting people know “you really do have to find someone else.”

Her career was unique in that she chose to be in medicine and pathology at the time when few women practiced medicine. Balancing career and family during these years was a priority for Mamie and she inspired her children and grandchildren to take part and to excel in their chosen fields.

Mamie was well known for her support of local artists, charities, fund raising events, local school, sports and community events.

On December 14, 2015 Mamie moved to Birchview Special Care Home in Birch Hills and became part of a large extended family and community. The family would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff, volunteers, school children and all others who were a part of Mamie’s life during these years. Your caring is beyond exceptional.
