Elaine was a superb person. Having work with her during her project: "Four Directions," was an amazing experience for me as an individual and as an interpreter for the many native people of the American continent that she brought in to Prince Albert to have a cultural experience with the Canadian natives. I will never forget her! and the many activities we did with the native peoples of Canada, Peru, Guatemala, Costa Rica and other nations around the world. Elaine was always a force that made everything possible. I am really sorry to know that she died so young! I know Robert must be missing her a lot! My condolences to him.

Mary Heit posted a condolence

My name is Mary Heit & I have been friends with Elaine for 42 years. We are the same age, like so many of my other women friends. We met when we both began teaching for the Lac Laronge Indian Band in 1978. I was in Laronge & she was in Stanley Mission. It was such an exciting time, when the Band had taken over its own education system & we truly believed in the cause. We have been friends ever since. Elaine was one of the best teachers I have ever known. She was extremely intelligent & passionate about teaching. She was also an artist, a singer, an environmentalist, a social activist, a gardener, an avid canoeist, and someone who, along with her husband Bob, built a beautiful home with her own hands in the bush near Prince Albert. She was unfailingly warm, kind, generous, & humble. She cared little for material possessions & deeply for others. I could not visit her because of Covid, & Parkinson's disease over the last 2 years took away her mobility & made it very hard for her to talk but we did manage to have a really good telephone conversation less than two weeks ago. I am so very thankful for that. Friends like her are a treasure indeed & I am so very sad to learn that she has left. I want to offer my deepest condolences to the Sukava family. I actually met Elaine's parents in 1981, I believe, when Elaine & I traveled to Dundas together after going to the Winnipeg Folk festival. I remember having a sauna there with them. Elaine was a gift to me & I will never forget her. ❤
