Obituary of Geoffrey Owen Payton
Geoffrey Payton January 3, 1960 ~ December 31, 2020 Geoff Payton passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020. Geoff was the fifth and last child of Archdeacon W.F. and Betty Payton, born and raised in Prince Albert, SK. Geoff married Valerie Bornn in 1985, and together with their two children, Kendra and Mat, established a home and life with deep spiritual devotion. Geoff was highly intelligent, compassionate, with a dry sense of humour, and a deep and abiding love of the outdoors. One of the founding members of the Northern Image Photography Club, Geoff loved nothing better than to wander through whatever nature or forest trail he could find, camera(s) in hand to record whatever crossed his path. As a result, he took some fantastic photos, including shots of some animals from which the rest of us would have run. Prince Albert National Park was a favourite place, particularly the hike to Grey Owl’s cabin. Family camping trips were a yearly highlight, as were the photography club’s Weekend in the Woods excursions. Geoff taught photography classes at the Arts Centre for years, which were much in demand. Close to photography for him was the collection of “vintage” vehicles, all of which required “a little work”. He and Valerie together took on significant home renovation projects. There was not a tool, woodworking or mechanical, with which he was not familiar. His work career spanned professional cooking in various restaurants to his decades of work as a technician at the Satellite Station, which he loved. Geoff is survived by daughter Kendra (Andrew MacKenzie) and their daughter, Gabrielle, of Prince Albert, SK; son, Mat, of Saskatoon, SK; siblings: Rob (Jacqueline), Margaret (Babe), Christine (Jim), Fred (Marlene) and their families; Valerie’s mother, Margaret Bornn; Valerie’s siblings: Birnie (Pat), Anita, Reg (Julie), and Rod, brother-in-law Martin (Valerie) and their families. Geoff was predeceased by his beloved wife of 33 years, Valerie, his parents Archdeacon W.F. and Betty Payton, as well as Valerie’s sister, Eleanor, and Valerie’s father, Peter M. Bornn. A memorial service will be held later this year when Covid 19 regulations allow for a family gathering. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, #2 - 630 45th Street West, Saskatoon, SK S7L 5W9 or St. David’s Anglican Church, 500 24th Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 1S2. The family wishes to extend deep gratitude to the staff of the Saskatoon Cancer Clinic as well as the staff of the 6th Floor, Victoria Hospital, for their compassionate and devoted care. Gratitude is also extended to Phil Mengell for his friendship and assistance to Geoff. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca.
