Obituary of Gracie Anderson

Gracie (nee Young) Anderson

June 18, 1919 ~ June 28, 2021

Amazing Gracie slipped away peacefully on June 28, 2021, to dance with those who had gone before her. Outliving all her siblings and their spouses, she remained mobile and healthy to her last days. To have experienced her love, her support and her zest for life for so long was truly a blessing for us.

Born in MacRorie, SK., Gertrude Gracie Young was the 5th of 8 children. In 1938, she married Eugene (Gene) Anderson, her former teacher who taught in several rural communities near Lac Vert, SK.  Their 3 children, Dennis, Don and Gail were born during their 14 years in the Everton district, a place forever thought of as home. Subsequent moves took them to Hendon, Saskatoon, Rose Valley, Hanley, and finally to retirement in Saskatoon. Gracie was a devoted mother, a resourceful homemaker, a talented seamstress, plus an enthusiastic curler and bridge player. Happiest when with her family, she wholeheartedly helped out at the drop of a hat. Sweet and feisty, she will always be the best dancer, the best apple pie maker, the best Grandma.  She was an amazingly good sport – riding the Ferris wheel in Kinsmen Park on her 100th birthday! During their 40 years on Empire Avenue in Saskatoon, Mom and Dad had wonderful neighbors and enjoyed sharing their bounty of apples, lilies and roses.

Despite many health issues over the years, Gracie was always up for adventures: “trailering” with the Wandering Wheels Trailer Club, fishing trips, bus trips, family and school reunions, Caribbean cruises and trips to Hawaii, Arizona and Mexico. Failing eyesight and the loss of her sons resulted in a move to Parkville Manor in 2011 where her love of dance became legendary. Gracie especially enjoyed the companionship of her friend and dance partner Conrad.

We are grateful to Saskatoon Home Care, Parkville Manor staff and Good Shepherd Villas staff in Prince Albert for their good care.

Gracie is survived by her daughter Gail Syverson; granddaughters Kyle Syverson, Tricia Knight and Corrine (Erich) Lewand; grandsons Scott Anderson, Gary (Liz) Anderson, Dale (Trina) Anderson; 7 great grandchildren: Vanessa and Vince Knight,  Heather, Izaak and Ingrid Lewand, Michelle Anderson, Juliet and Marshall Anderson.

Gracie is predeceased by her husband Gene (2006); sons Dennis and Don (2011); son-in-law Larry (1988); and grandson Jay Syverson (1995).

We are so thankful for Mom’s long full life and for her gentle passing.   Donations in Gracie’s memory may be made to the Rose Garden Hospice, 450 – 1403 Central Avenue, Prince Albert, SK S6V 6J4.  We will celebrate her life at a private family gathering, with a graveside service at a later date.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray's Funeral Chapel, (306) 922-4729.
