Mary Christina (Skotte) Stene

Mary Stene, formerly of Shellbrook, SK, passed away peacefully at Hafford Special Care Centre on December 30th, 2021, at the age of 98.

Mary Christina was born to Christian and Laura Skotte on March 22, 1923, in the Holbein district. She was a little sister to Margaret, Katie and Norman. Mary lost her mother, Laura at the young age of 3. While living in Saskatoon, Agnes Mills became Mary’s stepmother.  In 1933 they moved to a farm at Alingly near Spruce Home, SK.  Her father, Christian, passed away in 1937. Mary completed her Grade 8 in 1938 in Alingly.

While working in Sturgeon Valley, at 17 years of age, she met her lifelong love, Minard Stene and was married November 9, 1940, in the Shellbrook Lutheran parsonage. Minard and Mary farmed at Mayview, SK where they raised their three daughters: Luella (Irwin) Gatzke, Inez (Ross) Larson and Shelley Brad.

In 1973, they sold the farm and moved into Shellbrook to be closer to their family. During their time in Shellbrook, Mary cleaned homes and the church for many years. Mary’s spare time was spent gardening, baking, sewing, crocheting and knitting.  She handmade many quilts and clothing for the grand and great-grandchildren. Mary lived a very social life with her door always open to friends and family, and a fresh pot of coffee and/or meal waiting to be shared with those she cared about.

In March 1979, Minard passed away leaving her a young widow. She continued to clean homes and be part of the church community. Once her house became too much for her to keep, she moved into a duplex in Shellbrook. This allowed her to make coffee for new friends who all became very important to her and continued to be active at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Due to health issues she moved to Hafford Special Care Centre in 2016. Here she participated in craft classes, entertained the staff with her family’s many stories and took special care of the facility’s cats. The staff at the care home also became her extended family and often shared that Mary brought feelings of joy to the other residents at the care home. Mary's final years were very difficult for her after the loss of her youngest daughter Shelley in 2018; gratefully, her steady optimistic attitude and faith were by her side at all stages of her life journey. Hafford Special Care Centre took great care of Mary until she passed peacefully in her sleep telling the staff she had somewhere special to be the next day.

Mary is predeceased by her parents, Christian & Laura; siblings, Margaret, Katie & Norman; husband of 38 years, Minard; daughter, Shelley Brad; great-granddaughter, Sophia Brad; and many in-laws, relatives and friends.
